We used to send my little sister up the laundry chute if we forgot our key when we got home from school. (We were early latch key kids.) Our basement was accessible from our garage, which was never locked.

My Mamaw has a laundry shoot/drop in her upstairs middle bathroom that you could drop the clothes down to the laundry room. I was going to mention this in the comments because I didn't think it would be on the list but I'm glad i waited until the end to post lol

Paper towel dispenser but can't remember what they called it back in the day likewise with toilet paper as well, My folks also used cast iron radiators at one point as well especially during winter times and had laundry chutes to.

I remember my grandma used to have a toilet seat lid cover, made of carpet. It fit like a seat cover for your car. I remember these in several relatives bathrooms actually. They would generally match a small oval rug that went in front of the sink.

We had friends that bought a huge old home in St Louis. We were both ill to see them modernize an early 1900’s kitchen that had built in oak cabinets with some of these features. They then tore out all of the amazing hand carved oak and cherry trim and doors throughout the house. There were 3 fireplace mantles 2 went floor to ceiling. They told us about all of the changes they planned before hand. I said I might be a bad idea as the home was across from a beautiful park, on a tree lined street, and nothing but late 1800’s early 1900’s homes. They lost a great deal of money on their upgrades when they tried to sell the house as “modernized” in a historical area. No one wanted a vintage home outside and modern inside. It was eventually purchased and turned into a student housing unit.

Growing up in the 1950's in California. Our kitchen had a California Cooler. They could be a floor to ceiling cabinet or a small closet next to the kitchen iteself. This differed from a pantry, as this cabinet had a cutout in the entire floor covered by a wire mesh screen to allow the cool air from under the house to enter and keep the cabinet insides cooler than the rest of the kitchen. This kept can goods cooler in the times before expiration times were printed on foods. Often items were sold and kept in paper bags too. It was not unusual for the temperature to be as much as 20 degrees cooler. When my mom had our kitchen remodeled in the 1960's she included a cooler again with all the new cabinets. Another item found in most kitchens was the set of Kitchen cannisters They were labeled for flour, sugar, coffee, tee etc. These sets were all the same color and style with the same printing style on each. Common to be given as wedding gifts. With the addition of so many modern counter top appliances, these had to go to make space.

Kitchen nooks are gone? Maybe in those built-in styles, but the last 30 years still demand some giant public kitchen which has big space for the portable table. So it really hasn’t gone away, just not built-in.
